After earning a BA in Asian Studies from Columbia College in New York (1966), Dr. Horton graduated from medical school at Duke Medical School in Durham North Carolina in 1970 as an honor student (A.O.A.) and commencement speaker. He completed a rotating internship in pediatrics, medicine and psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital (1970-71) before founding and directing Prem Nagar Medical Services in Hardwar, India (1971-73). He returned to the U.S. in general medicine private practice in Bethesda Maryland (1973-77) where he also taught at George Washington Medical School. He traveled teaching for The Elan Vital Foundation in U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia (1978-90). Dr. Horton relocated to California where he established his long term private practice in Integrative Medicine in Westlake Village (1990-2019) and continued teaching medicine - at USC Medical School.

Since 2000, Dr. Horton has been lecturing and offering seminars on shifting from stress to wisdom. He served for 10 years as a hospice director and also as a board member of River Oaks Academy Charter School in Westlake Village. Dr. Horton co-authored The Inner Game of Stress. He is currently writing Understandings for a Peaceful Departure, medical stories of healing trauma and radical well-being.
